Social networking and StumbleUpon

While working out ways to promote various products and services such as:

I have been noticing people trying to introduce me to Social networking and mentioning terms like web2 StumbleUpon, Twitter and many more words that I had not heard before.

As a result, yesterday, I finally took the plunge and pressed the StumbleUpon button that appeared on my Squidoo lens about My brother-in-laws farm.

To my surprise, I found that creating an account and creating a StumbleUpon link pretty easy. This may be because I have been joining all sorts of forums, sites and blogs left, right and centre recently or (more realistically) the StumbleUpon development team have made a simple site for us ordinary people to use.

From my limited experience of StumbleUpon, I already have found some pros and cons for using it -

The Pros include easy set up, a toolbar for your browser to simplify identifying and linking to sites you like or dislike, plenty of information about what it does, heaps of people already using it and other features I have yet to stumble upon.

The major Con from my perspective is the way the application allows for porn-rated content. StumbleUpon appears to use ratings to prevent people who provide this type of content from showing up in front of people who want to see straight content only, however, my first attempt at using the StumbleUpon button on my browser brought a site with funny content but it had advertising, (whether on purpose or not, of a highly questionable nature). A quick press of the 'not for my taste' button and I was able to move on. Now hopefully, this site is less likely to appear for future Stumblers and hopefully legislation and public opinion, in the future, can deal with this grey area.

Well, it seems that I'm getting used to the StumbleUpon application and the terminology and maybe I have raised your interest too. If you would like to have a go on this web2 community then you may as well register and let me know what you think.

If you already use StumbleUpon then please let me know of any features you like.

Want to share your opinion and get responses

When you want to share some ideas with others who are browsing or searching on the internet, you can use many alternatives. One of the more interesting technologies that I have been able to find is using blogs.

In using a blog site I'm trying to let people know what I think, share my ideas and provide links to other useful services and products and to provide a location for people to comment and let me know their ideas, links and other useful services and products.

One of the most amazing things about blogging, is that you can do it for free. Here are the sites I have found so far to let you do so:

If you want to have a play and see what can be done, click on one of the above links, choose the create a blog links on the page and create your own blog.

Add a comment and let me know when you get started on your blog site.
